GOP congressman: ‘Social Security was a bad idea’

Republicans say dumb things.

During a debate Thursday night with his two Democratic opponents, freshman GOP Rep. Steve Knight said this:

“I think that Social Security was a bad idea. I do. I absolutely think it was a bad idea. I think that what should have happened was we should have had the government sit down with the private sector and build a system that people could take with them.”

According to Daily Kos’s David Nir, it’s the kind of statement that is “ready-made for a Democratic attack ad.”

The question now is which Democrat will emerge to take on Knight. Attorney Bryan Caforio has caught the eye of national Democrats and has managed to bring in some (but not that much) money, though he has outraised the feeble Knight for the last two quarters. Agua Dulce Town Council member Lou Vince, meanwhile, has the endorsement of the state Democratic Party but has raised almost nothing.

Another conscience-deprived conservative who supports the privatization of Social Security so that American wage-earners would be forced to play Russian Roulette with their retirement savings.
