Geraldo Rivera thinks Omar Mateen’s victims didn’t ‘fight back’ hard enough

Appearing on Fox & Friends this Monday morning, Geraldo Rivera seemingly shamed the victims of Omar Mateen’s terror attack on an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, assuming that their fate was due to a lack of will to defend themselves.

“When you’re in that situation and you have no weapons, you have two choices. If you can’t hide and you can’t run, you have two choices — you stay and die, or you fight. For God’s sakes, fight back. Fight back,” Rivera said.

“There’s a hundred people that he murdered with one weapon that he reloaded,” he continued. “When he reloaded they must — people must — America must understand, we are at war with Islamic terror, with these terrorists. We’ve got to stop them in [Syria], we’ve got to stop them in [Iraq], and we’ve got to stop them in the Pulse, Orlando.”

As Raw Story’s David Ferguson points out, Rivera’s critique of the victims’ alleged hesitancy is flawed. Research has shown that mass shooting situations are completely chaotic, with even seasoned tactical veterans freezing up or becoming “disoriented” at the onset of an attack.
