This Tuesday, police in Charlotte, North Carolina shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, who witnesses say was disabled and unarmed.
Reports say that police were searching for someone else when Scott, who is African American, was shot and killed.
According to a local news report, police were searching for a suspect with an outstanding warrant at an apartment complex when they came upon Scott who was sitting in his vehicle.
“The subject got back out of the vehicle armed with a firearm and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in an official statement.
“I don’t believe [the man shot] was the one with the warrants, but we don’t know if there was a connection,” Police Chief Kerr Putney told reporters in a press conference.
From the Charlotte Observer:
A woman who said she is Scott’s daughter claimed that the man was unarmed when he was shot. She live streamed a video from the scene on Facebook for more than an hour after the shooting.
In the video, the woman said her father was sitting in his vehicle reading a book and waiting for the school bus to drop off his son, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner. She claimed in the video that her father was Tasered and then shot four times, and that he was disabled.
Numerous witness accounts, including a woman who identified herself as Scott’s sister, said that he was unarmed.
