Saturday Night Live has been mocking presidents for as long as I’ve been alive, but this is the first time in history that a president/president-elect has launched a counter-attack against the comedy show.
On last weekend’s show, Alec Baldwin brought back his widely-lauded Donald Trump impersonation to poke fun at the incoming president’s compulsive relationship with his Twitter account.
The sketch imagined Trump retweeting “some random kid in high school” among other folks while he should have been paying attention to a security briefing.
True to his razor-thin-skinned nature, Trump lashed out at the segment mid-show.
“Just tried watching Saturday Night Live – unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse. Sad.”

The irony couldn’t have been more plain: In response to a sketch mocking his propensity for impulsive tweeting, the president-elect … impulsively tweeted about it. Satire in the age of Trump has already been difficult for Saturday Night Live, but it seems increasingly caught in a feedback loop: Any ridiculous heightening of his behavior is doomed to instant irrelevance by Trump’s reaction to it.
