Dan Rather: ‘Watergate was the biggest political scandal — until now’

In a condemnatory post on his Facebook page, veteran journalist Dan Rather slammed the legitimacy of the Trump administration in the wake of revelations surrounding ex-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

“The White House has no credibility on this issue,” Rather wrote. “Their spigot of lies – can we finally all agree to call them lies – long ago lost them any semblance of credibility.”

“We need an independent investigation,” he added. “Damn the lies, full throttle forward on the truth.

“[This] is real and it is serious. Deadly serious. We deserve answers and those who are complicit in this scandal need to feel the full force of justice.”

This Monday, Flynn resigned after news broke that he misled senior White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about details surrounding wiretapped phone conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn allegedly assured Kislyak that sanctions imposed by then-President Obama would be eased.

Flynn blamed the “fast pace of events” leading up to the White House transition for giving Pence and other officials “incomplete information” regarding the conversation. Pence had initially denied Flynn discussed the sanctions with the Russian ambassador, but evidence later contradicted his claims.

In his Facebook post, Rather said that the scandal surrounding Flynn could be bigger than Watergate.

“Watergate is the biggest political scandal of my lifetime, until maybe now,” he wrote. “It was the closest we came to a debilitating Constitutional crisis, until maybe now.”

“And we may look back and see, in the end, that it is at least as big as Watergate… It may become the measure by which all future scandals are judged.”

“It has all the necessary ingredients, and that is chilling. This Russia story started out with an avalanche and where we go from here no one really knows.”
