Flynn lied to the FBI regarding his conversation with Russian ambassador

Former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn told the FBI in an interview last month that he did not discuss U.S. sanctions against Russia before President Donald Trump took office, contradicting the intercepted communications obtained by intelligence agencies.

Flynn, who resigned on Monday amid concerns that he misled Vice President Mike Pence regarding a series of calls with the Russian Ambassador, may be at risk of felony charges for potentially lying to the FBI.

According to The Hill, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rebuffed calls to recuse himself from any investigation involving contact between Trump’s associates and Russia.

The retired general came under fire on January 24 when former Attorney General Sally Yates told White House officials about the true contents of the call and warning them that Flynn could be blackmailed by Russia.

In an interview with the Daily Caller, Flynn said he didn’t discuss “sanctions” but did discuss the Obama administration’s expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats late last year.

President Trump said in a press conference on Thursday that Flynn is “fine person” and that he did nothing wrong in engaging with the Russian envoy.

The Washington Post reached out to the FBI and the retired general’s spokesman, both declining to respond.
