Speaking to NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press this Sunday, Arizona Republican Senator John McCain spoke out against President Trump attacks on the press, saying attempts by the White House to slander “adversarial” reporters is a slippery slope to dictatorship.
Referring to Trump’s tweet on Friday where he said the press is the “enemy of the American people,” McCain defended the importance of a free press.
“A fundamental part of that new world order was a free press. I hate the press, I hate you especially, but the fact is we need you, we need a free press,” McCain said.
“That’s how dictators get started,” McCain added. “They get started by suppressing free press, in other words, a consolidation of power.”
“I am not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I am just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”
