During a press briefing this Monday, a reporter questioned White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer about the logic behind President Trump’s airstrikes on a Syrian airbase in response to a horrific chemical attack.
Allegedly drawing from sources within the White House, most major news outlets reported that Trump’s emotional reaction to pictures of dead children from the attack played a role in his decision. Whether or not that’s true, it’s a narrative the White House embraces, regardless of the obvious contradiction that emerges.
“Why is it okay to bomb Syria but not okay to assist the refugees?” the reporter asked at the outset of the press briefing.

In response, Spicer insisted that the most humanitarian thing the United States can do is send bombs so that Syrians can stay in their homeland. He did not address the millions who have already been forced to flee. When asked about them on the campaign trail, Trump stated clearly he’d have no issue looking a refugee child in the face and telling them they “can’t come.”
