Republican scolds crowd: ‘Do you yell in church?’ Crowd responds: ‘Do you lie in church?’

According to a report from CBS Sacramento, a California GOP congressman had a rather contentious town hall event in the town of Oroville. Things got so intense during the event that Rep. Doug LaMalfa ended up walking off the stage.

The audience became angry when LaMalfa addressed questions about much-needed maintenance on the Oroville Dam and spillway. When the congressman couldn’t get a word in edgewise, he scolded the crowd.

“Do you yell at church?” LaMalfa asked the crowd at one point. That comment was met with intense booing and shouts of “Do you lie in church?”

After fielding several questions and hearing comments on a range of issues, LaMalfa moved on to healthcare where he struggled through a PowerPoint presentation. His narration was hard to follow as shouts continued from the crowd.

At one point, the congressman walked off stage, returning a few moments later to finish his presentation amidst the noise.

As pointed out by Daily Kos, a reporter for The Orion was liveblogging the event and revealed that the crowd wasn’t just angry about LaMalfa’s comments on the dam and healthcare.

According to George Johnston, LaMalfa said that the separation of church and state is not protected by the constitution, taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for abortions, and he sidestepped questions about voter fraud and Citizens United.
