Jimmy Kimmel: ‘I apologize for saying children should have healthcare’

Jimmy Kimmel‘s emotional rant on healthcare last Monday became a viral sensation. But the widespread attention also drew in some Trump supporters who don’t appreciate the subject of affordable health care being talked about on late night TV.

The subject of Kimmel’s rant last Monday was his infant son’s “pre-existing” heart condition. Kimmel talked about how his new baby seemed fine at first until a nurse noticed that his heart had a murmur and his skin color looked off. The host tearfully talked about how they discovered his son had a dangerous heart condition and had to go into surgery right away. It would be the first of several surgeries he’ll need over the course of his life.

This Monday, Kimmel reflected on his monologue and made the audience laugh much more this time around.

“One week ago tonight I made an emotional speech that was seen by millions, and as a result of my powerful words on that night Republicans in Congress had second thoughts about repeal and replace,” Kimmel said. “They realized that what is right is right and I saved health insurance in the United States of America.”

“I didn’t save it?” he said jokingly. “They voted against it anyway? I really need to pay more attention to the news.”

Kimmel showed a video of his baby doing well and thanked those who reached out to his family. But then he focused on his detractors, calling out the New York Post, the Washington Times for labeling him as an “out of touch, Hollywood, elitist creep.”

“My dream was to become an out of touch Hollywood elitist, and I guess it came true,” Kimmel said after pointing out that he grew up poor.

“And I would like to apologize for saying that children in America should have health care,” he continued sarcastically. “It was insensitive, it was offensive, and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.”
