Straight-marriage proponent Kim Davis may have an opponent next year when she’s up for reelection as Rowan County Clerk, namely the gay man she denied a marriage license to based on her Christian beliefs back in June of 2015.
According to the Associated Press, David Ermold is “seriously considering” a run at the job. Davis has confirmed that she’s seeking another term.
Davis first made headlines when she began turning down same-sex couples seeking out marriage licenses from her office — a move that was in direct defiance of the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling on marriage equality. At one point, footage of Ermold and his now-husband Davis Moore confronting Davis over the matter went viral across social media, launching the story to national prominence.
Ermold spoke about his plans on Twitter, saying he needed to “get in contact with the right people” before launching a run.

Davis went to jail for contempt of court as a result of her actions, and was released under conditions that she would not hinder the distribution of marriage licenses any further.
This October, she was briefly back in the news after making a pilgrimage to Romania with the evangelical Liberty Counsel to lobby against same-sex marriage.
One thing is for certain, if Ermold were to pull this off, it’d be the news story of the decade.
