This Sunday in Largo, Maryland, Vice President Mike Pence attended a service at the Metropolitan Baptist Church. According to a local news outlet, Pence was put in the awkward situation of having to sit through a sermon where the priest called out President Trump for his denigrating of immigrants from “shithole countries.”
According to WUSA 9, Pastor Dr. Maurice Watson shamed Trump for saying that he would rather import more immigrants from countries such as Norway than black-majority countries such as Haiti.
“I stand today as your Pastor to vehemently denounce and reject any such characterizations of the nations of Africa and of our brothers and sisters in Haiti,” Watson told the congregation as Pence sat amongst them. “And I further say: Whoever made such a statement, whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa… whoever said it, is wrong. And they ought to be held accountable.”
“There are members of this church who are from Africa, who are from Haiti. They call me pastor,” Pastor Watson added.
“A statement was made that we ought to welcome people from Norway more than we welcome people from Haiti,” he continued.
“Whoever made such a statement, and whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa, whoever — do you hear me, Church? —whoever said it is wrong, and they ought to be held accountable.”
WUSA 9’s reported that Pence “became visibly red-faced at times throughout the speech.”
