White House official becomes the second person in 48 hours to resign over domestic abuse allegations

According to breaking news report from The Washington Post, a second White House official has abruptly resigned over allegations of domestic abuse.

White House speechwriter David Sorenson resigned after his former wife came forward to say he was violent and emotionally abusive while they were married. Sorenson denies the allegations, even saying that he was the one who suffered abuse. Sorenson’s ex-wife Jessica Corbett said she brought up his alleged abuse while being interviewed by the FBI last fall as they were conducting a background investigation on him.

The White House is saying they just learned of the allegations Thursday night.

According to the White House, Sorenson’s position as a speechwriter did not require a security clearance.

From The Washington Post:

Sorensen’s resignation comes two days after another administration official, staff secretary Rob Porter, departed after two ex-wives said that he physically abused them. Senior White House officials and the FBI knew about the allegations for months, raising questions about why he was allowed to remain in his post.

Corbett first contacted The Post a week before Porter’s case became public. She said that during her marriage to Sorensen, he ran a car over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine’s coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life. During part of their marriage, he was a top policy adviser to Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage.

She said she did not report her abuse allegations to police because of Sorenson’s connections to law enforcement officials.

Sorenson’s departure comes just two days after Rob Porter resigned as White House staff secretary after his two ex-wives came forward to say he physically and emotionally abused them.

Porter resigned after images of his wife emerged online showing her with a black eye. He denied the accusations as well.
