Speaking at the inaugural BuzzFeed Brews event in Washington D.C. this Tuesday, rising GOP star Marco Rubio took the opportunity to remind us that he’s not convinced that climate change is actually a problem.
To this day, the climate change-denial trend of the right lays in stark contrast to a 2010 study that showed 97 to 98 percent of scientists believe in the basic theory of “anthropogenic” climate change — with several of the world’s most prominent national science academies acknowledging that the world’s climate is being affected by man-made causes.
“The U.S. is a country, not a planet,” Rubio said. “On the other hand if we unilaterally impose these things on the economy it will have a devastating impact. There has to be a cost-benefit analysis to every one of these principles people are pushing on. The benefit is difficult to justify when it’s only us doing it, no one else is doing it.”
Rubio went on to say that while the “climate is always changing,” he is not convinced that it is changing as a result of man-made causes.
In an interview with GQ Magazine last December, Rubio raised eyebrows when the interviewer asked him how old he thinks the earth is. With a bizarre, rambling response, Rubio suggested that he was not equipped to answer the question because he is “not a scientist” and went on to say that there are “multiple theories out there on how the universe was created.”
Science is of the consensus that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
