Christopher Cantwell, the white supremacist featured in a VICE documentary who was later shown in a Facebook video sobbing over fear of an impending warrant for his arrest, turned himself in to University of Virginia campus police this Wednesday. According to local news outlets, he was denied bail after a court hearing this Thursday.
Cantwell is facing charges after he pepper-sprayed a counter-protester during the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, although he claims it was in self-defense.
He’s facing two counts of illegal use of tear gas or other gases and one count of malicious bodily injury with a “caustic substance,” explosive or fire. All the charges are felonies.

In the video from earlier this month, Cantwell was terrified after hearing that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
“With everything that’s happening, I don’t think it’s very wise for me to go anywhere,” he says in the video. “There’s a state of emergency, the National Guard is here!”
“I don’t know what to do. I need guidance,” he said while wiping away tears.
In the VICE piece, Cantwell said that he carries a pistol and goes to the gym because he’s trying to make himself “more capable of violence.”
