A guy gave his Mormon parents a portrait of Obi-Wan Kenobi and told them it’s Jesus

A Utah man’s Mormon parents have a portrait of actor Ewan McGregor as a young Obi Wan Kenobi hanging in their living room, but they’re not Star Wars fans.

The man, who only wants to be identified as “Ryan,” told INSIDER that he gave the portrait to his mom and dad as a prank, hoping his devout parents would think it’s a portrait of Jesus.

“It stuck out to me as looking like a picture we had growing up of Jesus,” Ryan said. “I kind of chased that thought to, how funny would it be if my parents didn’t recognize who it was and actually hung it up on the wall. I have always tried to get away with things or pull some pranks on my family members and this seemed perfect.”

Considering that his mother hung the portrait on the wall, Ryan’s prank worked a little too well.

I’ve made a huge mistake. Mom loves her Jesus Christmas present and I’m not sure how to get out of this thing alive when she figures out.

A video posted to YouTube (that has since been removed) shows Ryan’s parents opening his gift and proudly showing it to family members.

Although his mom fell for the prank hook, line, and sinker, his dad was suspicious.

“[His dad] said that this morning they walked past it and my mother said something along the lines of ‘there is something off about that Jesus picture. I’m not totally sure I like it,'” Ryan recalled. “Which went hand in hand with what she looked like as she opened it. She knew something was off but wasn’t sure what. My dad kind of hung around saying it looked really familiar to him. He said ‘it almost looks like Obi-wan Kenobi.’ But figured it was just coincidence.”

Now that the post has gone viral, Ryan’s dad is completely in on the joke. But his mom still thinks there’s a brand new portrait of Jesus hanging in their home.

“As of now, I’m keeping my fingers crossed, mom doesn’t know. Still working on my exit plan there,” he said.
