Christian elementary school expels siblings after discovering their mother isn’t married

CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO — They came from different fathers, and their mother isn’t married to her live-in boyfriend — all factors that deemed two siblings unfit to attend Chapel Hill Christian School in Ohio, according to a report from local news station WKYC.

Summer Grant‘s daughters, Summaia, who is in the second grade, and Summar, who is in the fourth grade, went to the school for years but their last day of school was last Friday. According to the school’s pastor and administrator John Wilson, her children had to go because she had “committed adultery.”

“He said it was many reasons and the main one was because I was not married and my children had different fathers,” Grant told WKYC.

In a conversation with Wilson that Grant secretly recorded, the pastor tells her that she violated the Ten Commandments.

“There’s ten commandments and committing adultery is not part of that,” Wilson told Grant. “It’s not that they should not go to the school it’s that they can’t go to the school.”

Grant said that Wilson had once before lectured her about her marital status, asking her why she had children from different fathers.

“As Christian you are not supposed to judge,” she said. “You shouldn’t have affected these kids’ education over that.”

Grant wondered why she’s being singled out when there are other kids at the school with parents who aren’t married.

In a written statement to WKYC, Wilson said that parents whose children attend the school sign a written agreement pledging that they will live lives that “reflect a commitment to Christ,” adding that the children’s expulsions were “necessary in order to protect the safety of our school children and their families.”

From WKYC:

Grant says the timing couldn’t be worse. She says there’s about 30 days left of school. She says she can’t transfer them to a public school because her kids would lose a scholarship, which allowed them to attend the private school.

She hopes the pastor changes his mind — not for her — but for her kids.
