Conservative activist puts together ‘legal fund’ to sue publications that criticize her out of existence

This Wednesday, President Trump praised Candace Owens, the black conservative activist (and conspiracy theorist) lauded by Kanye West, as someone who’s having a “big impact” on the political discussion in America.

“Candace Owens of Turning Point USA is having a big impact on politics in our Country,” Trump tweeted. “She represents an ever expanding group of very smart ‘thinkers,’ and it is wonderful to watch and hear the dialogue going on…so good for our Country!”

If Owen’s has her way, she could also have a “big impact” on publications that choose to be critical of her ideas.

In a tweet from this Wednesday, Owens announced that she was putting together a legal fund to go after publications that she thinks target black conservatives.

“One email, one phone call, and I am now putting together a legal fund to go after publications that think they can smear and libel black conservatives who dare to think for themselves,” she tweeted.

“Do you guys remember Gawker?” she asked sarcastically. “Yeah, me neither. Stay tuned.”

Owens is of course referring to the website Gawker, which was sued out of existence by famed wrestler Hulk Hogan in a lawsuit that was secretly bankrolled by tech billionaire Peter Thiel.

Owen’s accusations of “smear and libel” are spurious at best. She espouses ideas that many see as regressive and conspiratorial. During an appearance on TMZ Live alongside Kanye West, Owens regurgitated the debunked myth of the “Ferguson Effect,” denied that Trump has mad offensive remarks toward the black community, and called the killing of black men and women by cops a “tiny issue — all sentiments that rightly bring scrutiny whether one agrees with them or not.

The hypocrisy of her legal fund is that it comes on the heels of a “free thought” campaign waged by her and West, where they decry the alleged attempts of their ideological opponents to silence or marginalize them for their support of the MAGA brand. Now, she’s announcing a plan to implement the same exact injustice that purportedly galvanizes her movement: the silencing and intimidation of ideological opponents.

But then again, this is Trumplandia, where hypocrisy is baked into the message.
