This Monday, 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed of Texas was arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school. Instead of praising him for his innovative skills, Mohamed’s teachers took one look at his skin, then the clock, and came to an unfortunate conclusion – a conclusion that’s now bringing them national shame.
Joining in the social media reaction, President Obama heartwarmingly reached out to Ahmed, and at the same time fired a subtle dig directed at Donald Trump, saying that people like Ahmed are what make “America great,” referring to the Trump slogan “Make America Great Again.”
Here’s the tweet from Obama’s official Twitter account:
Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.
— President Obama (@POTUS) September 16, 2015
Not surprisingly, the reaction from conservative Twitter was vile.

“I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her,” Ahmed told reporters Wednesday. “It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it.”
Ahmed is suspended until Thursday, but is thinking about transferring to another high school.
