DeRay Mckesson slams ‘all lives matter’: You don’t yell ‘colon cancer matters’ at a breast cancer rally

#BlackLivesMatter activist DeRay Mckesson said during a CNN interview that repeating the message “all lives matter” was like yelling “colon cancer matters” at a breast cancer rally.

In an interview with CNN‘s Chris Cuomo, Mckesson condemned the police killings in Baton Rouge and said that the BLM movement continues to call for resolving conflicts through non-violent means.

“The movement began as a call to end violence,” he clarified. “And that call remains true today that we fight for a living breathing justice.”

“It’s hard because what we’ve seen over the last [24 hours] is people condemn the movement without knowing any facts, and what we said yesterday was that there was more questions than answers. So, the movement has always been rooted in a call to end violence. And like I said, that call remains the call today,” he continued.

“My heart goes out to the victims of all violence. We want to live in a world where people don’t die by gunfire. And we want to live in a world where police don’t have militarized weapons and the public doesn’t have access to these militarized weapons either.”

Mckesson also had a message for those who believe that the “black lives matter” slogan should be replaced with “all lives matter.”

“It’s this interesting thing that people are frustrated that black people are focusing on the unique trauma that black people are facing in this country, and I would never go to a breast cancer rally and yell out colon cancer matters.”

“And that’s what people are doing here. They are frustrated by the fact that people are focusing on the inequity in justice specially targeted to black people.”
