Here are 13 vintage ads that you won’t believe ever existed

We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go.

Most people would agree that judging the past through the lens of the present is tricky. But this collection of advertisements we stumbled on below from the early and mid-20th Century are pretty jaw-dropping.

With great power comes great responsibility, but apparently marketers in the “good ole’ days” didn’t pay much attention to that advice. Not that they do now, but the blatant racism and sexism displayed in these old ads makes today’s marketing campaigns look like PBS commercials.

Besides being horrifically discriminating, vintage ads were full of lies. But whether we like it or not, they’re part of our history.

What’s the point you’re trying to say? They all seem in proper order with me. Its a good thing my woman is here now as its poo-poo time and I’ll be needing her to wipe my ass afterward.

As a founding member of the Tea Party I have no idea what is wrong with these ads. They look perfectly appropriate to me. (sarcasm)

MoSt of these are inappropriate but some just need to be viewed through a historical lens. Housewife was the traditional role, and that wasn’t a bad thing, just as it isn’t now. There are just more choices for women now. Too bad there aren’t any for men. Work til you die or you aren’t worth love, or respect, or dignity. I’m glad we’ve helped women break out of their traditional roles. Now it’s time to do get same for men.

I’m sorry, exactly which choices are men lacking? Are you suggesting that women are not expected to work? I’m really confused about your beef here.

No… I don’t think that’s right. You probably think that was a piece of wisdom, but it wasn’t. It displays your lack of education and awareness.

What cave do you live in? I know many stay at home Dads. I think you lack respect for them so you assume everyone does.

The sad part is that the ads have disappeared, but the attitudes, both racial and gender-wise have not.

Schlitz wasn’t too bad. Places the woman in a traditional gender role, but doesn’t say anything overtly sexist. Maybe it’s her turn? Still, if they wanted to do this today, they’d have to have him look like he’s coming something too.

In 1958, I came to the US to study at Iowa State University. I chose to enter via Miami and from there go to Iowa by bus.
I experienced two major cultural shocks. The first was the Dixie Line at work. After crossing it, people of color could seat anywhere in the bus. The second came when the bus took Route 66 which connected the East Coast and West Coast (before the Interstate Highway System was completed). I was so impressed by the very patriotic pious homes along the road with an American Flag and a sign that read “CHRISTIAN HOME! … Then someone explained to me that those homes were precursors of today’s Bead & Breakfast … the signs meant …. NO JEWS ADMITTED! …. 13 years later after thousands of American youth were killed fighting Nazi anti-Semitism. Then, in 1969, I saw women in the United States being able to borrow money or apply for a credit card, without the collateral of a male in their household.
For those that did not vote or voted for candidates that are committed to set the clock back… look at the adds and get in your heads what the “good old times are about!

You shared 13 ads, 11 dealt with sexism and 2 with racism, and yet your article gives racism the primary mention. Is it because the racism is somehow more abhorrent and sexism is still so prevalent today?
