An Iowa father who was offended by the sex education curriculum at his child’s school caused the lock down of several schools with a threatening email.
KWWL reports that Bruce “Deano” Divers, Jr. now faces charges for sending an email to school officials in which he stated that he planned to “retaliate” in response to the sex ed classes being taught to fourth graders in Decorah, Iowa schools.
According to KWWL, his email included the words:
“Decorah schools spiritually declared war against my house today. When I retaliate Monday morning…”
Decorah Community School District Superintendent Mike Haluska said that if Divers did not want his child partaking in sex education classes, he could have signed a waiver at the start of the year exempting them from them.
Haluska told the station:
“Interestingly enough, we have paper work available at the beginning of the school year for anyone who wishes to have their children exempted from any conversations that have to do with that type of subject matter.”
Divers was arrested Monday and charged with harassment. According to officials, he threatened two Decorah teachers on Facebook. Classes were held as usual on the Monday following his threats, but Haluska said that a quarter of the 1,700 children in the district were absent.
A look at Diver’s Facebook shows posts from Obama conspiracy-type websites and a few Christian-themed memes. His profile picture currently asks to “Free Kent Hovind,” featuring an animated picture of the Christian fundamentalist and creationist lecturer. Hovind is currently under house arrest for a Federal mail fraud and criminal contempt conviction in 2015.
