Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Christian group best known for their door-to-door evangelism, their ban against blood transfusions and other medical procedures and their strict and conservative doctrine, recently released a video that aims to teach kids how to “become Jehovah’s Friend” and call out same-sex couples for their sin against God.
The video, which was uploaded to YouTube by Pink News, who also covered it on their website, looks like a disturbing and homophobic version of Inside Out. The cartoon starts off innocently enough, with a young girl drawing a picture of her family, when she notices that her friend Carrie drew herself with two mommies.
Trouble starts to brew when the girl tells her mother about Carrie’s “two mommies,” and her teacher’s anti-Jehovah message that “all that matters is that people love each other and they’re happy.” The mother decides that it’s time to put her foot down on all this tolerance and acceptance.
“People have their own ideas about what is right and wrong,” explains the modern-looking but archaic-thinking cartoon mother. “But what matters is how Jehovah feels. He wants us to be happy and he knows how we can be happiest. That’s why he invented marriage the way he did.”
The mother goes on to explain that God created Adam and Eve and “invented marriage” to be just between a man and a woman. She explains that Jehovah doesn’t approve of gay marriage — not by using the slim biblical evidence that’s strictly against gay marriage — but by using vaguely related Jesus quotes about “sticking with your wife.”
The mother than says that if Carrie’s mommies don’t curb their homosexuality, they won’t be able to enter heaven, throwing in a strange analogy along they way.
“Jehovah’s standards haven’t changed. It’s kind of like bringing something on an plane – what happens if someone tries to bring something on that isn’t allowed,” explains the mother. “It’s the same with Jehovah. He wants us to be his friend, and live in paradise forever, but we have to follow his standards to get there. To get there we have to leave some things behind – that means anything Jehovah doesn’t approve of.”
The mother then suggests that if she wants Carrie’s parents to get to heaven, she should immediately tell Carrie that her mothers won’t be able to get to heaven if they continue their lifestyle, and offers to show her daughter several bible passages that can support her phobias.
The plan is almost guaranteed to work, since adults often get life advice from their kid’s creepy friends.
The video is a part of the “educational” Become Jehovah’s Friend series, which teaches kids lessons about generosity, honesty, going on a spiritual mission, and avoiding the evils of magic action figures.
