Michele Bachmann: The prayers of Christians are making Saudi Arabia a better place

Earlier this month, a group of evangelical leaders traveled to Saudi Arabia and met with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Included in the group was former Minnesota GOP congresswoman Michele Bachmann, and she has nothing but praise for the Middle Eastern kingdom notorious for being one of the worst abusers of human rights on earth.

While giving midterm elections commentary on the Believers Voice of Victory network this Tuesday night, Bachmann marveled at the “remarkable” things that are happening in the country.

“Islam is undergoing reform in various nations … so you are seeing Saudi Arabia going from the seventh century to the 21st century and they’re bringing reform with it,” Bachmann said in a video clip flagged by Right Wing Watch. “They talk a lot about tolerance for other beliefs. This is amazing — four years ago, you never would have heard this, ever.”

According to Bachmann, Saudi Arabia’s alleged transformation is the result of constant prayer.

“The fervent, effectual prayers of righteous men — people have been praying into these Muslim countries for God to reveal himself,” Bachmann continued. “He is, and we are seeing a change like we never saw before.”

Bachmann’s comments come in the wake of renewed attention focused towards the kingdom’s human rights record. As The New York Times pointed out in 2016, Saudi Arabia’s export of the “rigid, bigoted, patriarchal, fundamentalist strain of Islam known as Wahhabism has fueled global extremism and contributed to terrorism.” According to Amnesty International’s Middle East director of campaigns Samah Hadid, the international community “must end their deafening silence on Saudi Arabia and do their duty of [scrutinizing] the cruelty in the kingdom in order to prevent further outrageous human rights violations in the country and in Yemen.”

And of course, there was the kidnapping and murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi last month.

But Bachmann couldn’t be more pleased with the kingdom.

“I literally, with my own eyes … observed the shift that is happening in these nations,” Bachmann continued.

“So that’s why we don’t give up in prayer. This is the effect — no prayer is ever wasted … God is using them and he’s bringing a harvest with these prayers.”
