Pat Robertson: Eating disorders should be ‘treated as demonic possession’

During a segment on “The 700 Club” this week, Pat Robertson tackled the very serious topic of eating disorders, even bringing up the tragic story of singer Karen Carpenter, who died of anorexia in 1983.

Robertson agreed that those with eating disorders need serious help, but went on to say that such disorders could also “be treated as a demonic possession thing.”

“It is like a demon and it needs to be rebuked and cast out,” he said.

Robertson’s comments are an interesting little window into a destructive chapter of organized religion’s past, especially Catholicism. There are many documented cases where a person suffering from schizophrenia or some other disorder was seen by an exorcist rather than receiving the appropriate medical care.
