Russell Brand Mocks MSNBC’s Morning Joe Panel: ‘These Are Your Trusted Anchors?’ (VIDEO)

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning, comedian Russell Brand made a few waves by completely taking over the segment, brilliantly poking fun at the cable news world — even taking time out to hit on Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski in a rather suggestive manner.

At the outset of the segment, Brand had a little trouble with the table he was sitting at, which prompted Brzezinski to lean over to help him adjust it, provoking a comment from Brand that would set the tone for the rest of the eight and-a-half minutes.

“Careful, but that’s a low cut dress.” Brand said. “I’m only flesh and blood, I got instincts.”

The panel then tried to direct the focus towards Brand’s upcoming comedy tour, “The Messiah Complex,” which seemed to bring their guest back down to earth for a bit. But when co-host Brian Shactman tried to direct a question towards Brand, the comedian’s mind was already elsewhere.

“Who are these people? They’re at work, are they?” Brand asked as he whirled his chair around towards the Morning Joe staff in the background. “Yeah, they’re working,” Shactman replied.

“Work more quietly!” Brand yelled towards the staffers.

“That’s to create the atmosphere of, ‘we’re a hotbed of news,’” Brand said sardonically.

When asked about what venue Brand prefers when it comes to performance, he said the thing he enjoys most is stand-up comedy. But the comedian seemed to use the question as an opportunity to take a dig at cable news culture.

“The thing I enjoy most is stand-up comedy because you’re direct with your audience, you can’t be misinterpreted, people can’t get confused,” Brand replied. “You know what happens when you work in media, people like to change the information so they [pursue] a particular agenda.”

Brand was probably most direct with his sarcasm when he called out the panel on their habit of speaking about him in the third person. At one point past the middle of the segment, Mika Brzezinski turned to her co-hosts and ruminated about Brand’s presence on the show. “I think it’s not listening to him, it’s experiencing — it’s just sort of taking it all in.”

“You are talking about me as if I’m not here and as if I’m an extra-terrestrial,” Brand quipped.

Ending the segment, Brian Shactman joked that he was going to take a cue from Brand and come to work the next day with a “big necklace” and an open shirt. Upon hearing this, the comedian took direct aim at Shactman.

“That’s the problem with current affairs — you forget about what’s important, you allow the agenda to be decided by superficial information,” Brand declared. “What am I saying? What am I talking about? Don’t think about what I’m wearing. These things are redundant, superficial.”

“I’m distracted,” Brzezinski replied.

“Don’t be distracted,” Brand said, motioning towards Brzezinski as if to question the way she was gripping her water bottle. “What do you think that gesture means, the way you’re touching that bottle?”

“You need to lose that ring, Mika, because it means nothing to ‘ya,” Brand said amidst laughter from the panel. “She’s grasping for the shaft. She’s a shaft grasper.”
