Terrifying videos emerge from Mexico City of buildings collapsing after earthquake

Scores of people have been killed after an earthquake struck Mexico City, sending rescue workers to scour through buildings that collapsed in its wake.

At least 116 people died in quake that registered at a magnitude of 7.1. Most deaths were reported in Puebla, Morelos and Mexico states, and the country’s capital Mexico City, according to CNN.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said 27 buildings collapsed in the capital, which is about 75 miles from the epicenter, CNN affiliate Foro TV reported.

The quake hit hours after many people took part in drills and commemorative events on the anniversary of a devastating earthquake that killed thousands in Mexico City, more than three decades ago. Residents realized Tuesday’s earthquake wasn’t a drill when rooms trembled.

Soon after the quake struck, cellphone videos showing buildings collapsing began to circulate on social media.

Tuesday’s earthquake came just over a week after a 8.1-magnitude shaker struck off the southern coast of the country, killing at least 90.
