Texas mayor: ‘I’m more scared of large gatherings of young white men than Syrian refugees’

Texas Governor Greg Abbott may be one of many state governors who is trying to keep refugees out of his state, but that doesn’t mean everyone in Texas agrees with him. Take Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings, for example.

Rawlings wants to welcome Syrian refugees because it is the right thing to do. In an interview with MSNBC this Monday, Rawlings said worrying about Syrian refugees because of ISIS is like worrying about all young white men because of mass shootings.

Did a Texas mayor just make a salient point on the dangers of mass shootings versus terrorism? Yes, he definitely did.

“I am more fearful of large gatherings of white men that come into schools, theaters and shoot people up, but we don’t isolate young white men on this issue,” Rawlings said.

Rawlings went further, saying that demonizing refugees allows us all to “fall into the trap” of what ISIS wants, adding that “ISIS is no more Islamic than Nazi senior staff was Christian.”
