After Playboy Playmate Dani Mathers received her fair share of Internet wrath after ridiculing a naked woman at the gym in a Snapchat post, it looks like being labeled as a body-shaming bully won’t be her only punishment.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the LAPD’s sexual assault division is now looking into the matter after they received a report of “illegal distribution” of the image. LAPD Captain Andrew Neiman told the Times that staff from the LA Fitness gym where Mathers originally took the photo were the ones who reported it to police.
Mathers sparked a huge backlash after she shared the photo of an unidentified naked woman in the gym’s locker room with the caption: “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.”
Mathers was resoundingly accused of body-shaming the woman, while others said her actions actually broke the law. On Friday, LA Fitness revoked Mathers’ membership at all of their gyms.
“Her behavior is appalling and puts every member at risk of losing their privacy,” LA Fitness executive vice president of operations Jill Greuling told the Times. “Our written rules are very clear: Cellphone usage and photography are prohibited in the locker rooms,” Greuling said. “This is not only our rule, but common decency.”
The entertainment website TMZ is also reporting that Mathers has been suspended from her gig on the “Heidi and Frank” radio show on KLOS.
After apparently deleting her Twitter and Instagram accounts, Mathers posted an apology on Snapchat, claiming that the photo was “accidentally” shared and was meant to be sent as a private message.
“That was absolutely wrong and not what I meant to do,” she said. “I know that body-shaming is wrong. That is not the type of person I am.”
A Change.org petition calling for Mathers to be arrested for invasion of privacy has received nearly 20,000 signatures as of Saturday afternoon.
