This is how radical Christian parents homeschool their children

“If you look at creationism, you realize it’s the only possible answer to all the questions,” Levi’s mother tells him during a lesson.

The documentary Jesus Camp was released in 2006, and it provided a shocking window into the indoctrination of kids who participated in an evangelical Christian summer camp in North Dakota.

One fascinating part of the film shows how the indoctrination continues inside the home. Levi, who the filmmakers follow fairly closely, is a charismatic kid who fashions himself to be somewhat of a preacher. Watching him and his brother interact with their mother is revealing, considering that she smashes any notion of independent thought or questioning.

“If you look at creationism, you realize it’s the only possible answer to all the questions,” Levi’s mother tells him during a lesson.

It’s not right to brainwash a child to follow in your delusional religion. We let our children make their own choices and they are much better adults for it. Children should have the right to challenge, read, research, and consider all the options rather than be spoon fed only one side.

I think if the stupid parents want their kids to continue the stupidity tradition, we should let them. After all we need people to perpetually work those minimum wage jobs.

Creationism – or religion in general – provides an answer to every possible question. Problem is, it’s the wrong answer.

I work for CPS. This isn’t child abuse in the legal sense. Parents still have a right to instill their values in their children no matter how completely off-center they may be. All we can do is pray for their enlightenment.

Watching this was infuriating. Ok, I get it. You are raising your children to be Christians. That’s good….maybe they will grow up to be good people; to live in a Christ-Like manner: treat others how they want to be treated, be charitable, loving and kind.
And teaching creationism.. as much as I disagree with the theory, hey….it’s their choice.
But listening to this woman talk to her son made me cringe. It’s almost like she wants to be contrary, there is defensiveness in her voice, and defiance. Her mocking tone as she says global warming is a myth…and that “science proves nothing” line….
Asking her son what he would do if one day teacher called him stupid for his beliefs….basically teaching him that anyone who disagrees with her doctrine is the enemy, that wants to oppress all Christians. Creating an us against them attitude that will only teach the boy to be judgemental and intolerant. Which is definitely NOT a christlike virtue.

Yes this is child abuse. It’s no different then kidnapping a child and locking them in your basement for 10 years. The reality is, she needs to isolate her kids because her belief system can’t stand the minimum amount of sunlight. Then there’s the issue of gay children no doubt they teach them to hate themselves, another form of child abuse. Evangelicalism creats bad people.

Totally disagree with what she is teaching the child and even more with how, but these comments are just as bad…only Christians work fast food, teaching him to be judgemental, this is why the world thinks we are idiots??? Atheists work fast food too, aren’t these statements judgemental and hypocritical, and the rest of the world does this exact thing as well with their religions, not just America…Sarah is the only one who doesn’t make us sound like ignorant judgmental hypocrites, we can’t put people down for the exact things we are doing…SAD on so many levels

Bobby I think what you’re suggesting is all ideas are equal, no they absolutely are not and that’s one of the problems with our media right now. To believe creationism, you must have your scientific reasoning abilities damaged, those people have a much lower chance of becoming scientist, engineers and other high-paying jobs. Some will find these jobs, we are talking about averages, please don’t suggest absolutes as an argument.

Statistically we know the more religious you are, the lower the average IQ. We also know statistically, if you’re atheist, you have a far lower chance of going to prison than a religious person. Atheist only make up 1/5 of 1% of America’s prison population, but yet we make 10 to 20% of the US population. There is a correlation between atheist and religious people, that religious people and their apologists would prefer to ignore.

Bobby, one other thing. Openly mocking people in society who are doing ridiculous things, has it’s purpose in social evolution. At some point, they will be in embarrassed, their children will not want to be tagged as people who are homeschooled, because they don’t want to be seen as people who are ignorant of reality.

What they are teaching in their homeschooling classes is not a matter of opinion and choice, they are damaging their kids and they’re damaging society their teaching their children lies. If we end up with a population with the Bible in one hand lined up against a billion Chinese with engineering degrees in their hand, we are not going to win.

I agree wholeheartedly. I’m a Unitarian, and our Church teaches to follow your own path. I raised my daughter to think for herself, and to believe in what she thinks is right for her. I’m an atheist myself, she leans that way, but still has her own set of beliefs. I told her early on, she can choose her path because it’s her choice and hers alone. I made sure she was educated on all religions and science so that she would have the facts she needed to make her decisions.

the sad thing, she doesn’t understand enough about climate change to know that weather and climate are two different things. and her contempt for climate change is based on what? this is what makes our children unable to compete in a global world now, and is a big part of the dumbing down of our nation. these same kind of parents are getting on school boards across the country and destoying the pubic school system. these are the parents who don’t teach their children that the founding fathers were mostly deists. these are the parents who tell their children we are a christian nation, which we are not. these are the parents who say it’s okay to pollute our nation, use up all our natural resources, and say it’s okay to hate others because god told them it was okay, and will save them because that’s just the way it is. I truly fear for our nation based on these parents and their total lack of a real non-indoctrination education.

As a progressive Christian of the Left…I believe in both….I think there is very little that either side cannot agree on….God’s creating of the Universe could have very well been the Big Bang ….but it had a plan to it…I do not think we came from a one cell omeba or evolved from a Monkey tho…and the beginning of the Bible could have taken many more years than is excepted…a “day” could have meant much more than is translated with many more years involved and much more going on than is recorded…also people lived much longer in the early days…there was not the disease and viruses then that there are now…I do think that early Man looked a lot different than we do now also….in that sense, I believe in evolution….man has evolved from those first days…I think a lot more research needs to be done in the name of Christianity and science to say that they do not merge…also translations of the Bible down thru the years were done by MAN….what have they left out or changed that would surprise us all? I am pretty sure the Vatican knows more than they tell us since a lot of the early writings are in their archives…and things that have been translated and then not revealed would probably shock us all!!

    October 3, 2014 at 8:34 pm

Cindy keep reading keep studying I predict one day you will be an atheist. You’re already questioning the things that I questioned a long time ago; how many different versions of the Bible are there who translated them. Even today when someone states to me “God says…” I immediately say no, you did. And I look behind them to the right and behind them to the left and say, Yep you said that. Although one thing I never stated was that we came from monkeys. No, we did not come from monkeys, we came from an ancestor that we share in common with them. Keep readingm, an open mind will only lead you in one direction.

    October 3, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Mike, which part of I disagree with what she is teaching him how she’s going about it implies I think her ideas are equal to ours? Your points, while all valid, have nothing to do with what I was saying. The ONLY thing I was trying to get across was that the same way radical christians demonize all atheists, we as atheists cannot generalize all christians as unintelligent. You completely took what I said and ran in the wrong direction with it. The only thing relative you said to my comment was mocking people who do ridiculous things, which is only partly true, what’s the point of mocking all christians? Are you implying we should mock and humiliate all christians. Which again, how is that any better than them trying to mock us atheists? Fighting fire with fire often just leads to setting the whole forrest on fire. Atheism is well on its way, the light of day is shining through to more and more every day. It’s a new age in humanity. Let’s not go down in history as the people who were cruel just to make other people see our way, the same thing we say of so many beliefs we are against now. Being a hypocrite only proves you’re a hypocrite. If they wanna be wrong, let them be wrong. I don’t feel the need to put anybody else down to make myself look more intelligent or appear more righteous. We are right, and time will show that.

  24. Mike

    October 3, 2014 at 10:02 pm

Bobby you’re throwing the argument of absolutes. Nowhere did I say all Christians you’re simply making an assumption that people talk absolute, most normal people do not. My mother was Christian, I don’t mock my mother, but her religion was inward not outward. Her religions was for her not to simply force other people to follow. She sent me to public school and taught me to think for myself, she wasn’t freaked out when she realized I was an atheist. There was nothing to mock my mother for.

The subject of this thread is evangelical Christians that homeschool, why would you think I’m talking about all Christians? I would even go as far as to suggest a lot of evangelicals aren’t even Christians, they’re bad people that found a place where it’s easy to hide their ignorance, racism and hatred.

From your statement “we can’t put people down for the exact things we are doing” I took to mean their ideas or as valid as ours and explained why I wholeheartedly disagree. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you.

So There were only three points I was disagreeing with you on at “some” level:

1 Evangelical homeschooling Christians ideas are not equal to others and should not be given equal time.
2 Mocking people that have dangerous and harmful ideas, is a way society can keep them under control. (we’re not just being mean to them)
3 We didn’t come from monkeys.

Only the indoctrinated would say we “come from monkeys.” It’s laughable.

We not only CAME FROM apes, but we ARE apes.

Most christianity sects are kowtowing to more science like this-i read one the other day, it was hilarious, it said “The bible teaches that man is a highly evolved animal.” oh is that what it teaches? I loved how the modern day bible still forgets women too!

Back to the issue-this video of christian thinking is no less nuts than anything else they say.

  28. Mike

    October 5, 2014 at 5:29 pm

Bob, One correction yes, man is a primates, but we didn’t come from apes. Man and apes came from a shared ancestor, back when modern-day apes and man existed.

People can insist that their God is the only true one and that the Atheist position or philosophy is wrong if they so wish. There is no humility in that. To suggest that some supernatural entity created humans in the form we are in is ridiculous, especially when it is only a faith based belief. We know beyond a shadow of doubt that we are an evolved species and related to every other species on the planet. All the EVIDENCE suggests this is the case.

I cannot see how people can accept that they are going to not only get a second life but get one that lasts an eternity. Why? Because they have faith and accept that a God came from the sky in human form, died for them and came back to life to save their souls? Come on folks – where is your evidence for any of this.

Even if you were quoting from the original books that make up the Bible, those books were written by man. But is instilling ‘values’ the same as beliefs? If she, or any parent, were simply teaching them the golden rule, that would be a value. Teaching them that creationism is the only possible answer is a belief, and not based on fact or substantiating evidence.
