I don’t know who Samer Alhato is. I don’t know his political background, or what groups he’s affiliated with, or what mix of ideology he espouses. Glancing down his Facebook and Twitter feeds, I can see there’s some ideas I both agree and disagree with, along with a bunch of commentary on pop culture that I couldn’t care less about.
But today I came across this Facebook post of his that’s going viral, and it perfectly encapsulates the hypocrisy of the partisan media storm surrounding the Duggars these past few weeks:
“When black folks have several children, they’re called irresponsible,” he wrote. “When whites people do, it’s called ’19 kids and counting.’ When Muslims are accosted for having the ABILITY to marry more than one wife, they’re called misogynistic. When white people do it, it’s called ‘Sister Wives.’ When the various cultures of brown folks around the world have arranged marriages, they are shamed for it. When white people do it, it’s called ‘Married At First Sight.'”
“Want to know what White Privilege is? Watch TLC.”
The statement neither condemns or endorses families having litters of kids, arranged marriages, or polygamy – it simply points out how TLC, the network that aired the Duggar reality show 19 Kids and Counting, gives a sympathetic and apologist platform to social behavior that’s condemned by white Christian folks when brown-skinned people from the Middle East do it.
