I don’t know who Samer Alhato is. I don’t know his political background, or what groups he’s affiliated with, or what mix of ideology he espouses. Glancing down his Facebook and Twitter feeds, I can see there’s some ideas I both agree and disagree with, along with a bunch of commentary on pop culture that I couldn’t care less about.
But today I came across this Facebook post of his that’s going viral, and it perfectly encapsulates the hypocrisy of the partisan media storm surrounding the Duggars these past few weeks:
“When black folks have several children, they’re called irresponsible,” he wrote. “When whites people do, it’s called ’19 kids and counting.’ When Muslims are accosted for having the ABILITY to marry more than one wife, they’re called misogynistic. When white people do it, it’s called ‘Sister Wives.’ When the various cultures of brown folks around the world have arranged marriages, they are shamed for it. When white people do it, it’s called ‘Married At First Sight.'”
“Want to know what White Privilege is? Watch TLC.”
The statement neither condemns or endorses families having litters of kids, arranged marriages, or polygamy – it simply points out how TLC, the network that aired the Duggar reality show 19 Kids and Counting, gives a sympathetic and apologist platform to social behavior that’s condemned by white Christian folks when brown-skinned people from the Middle East do it.

This does ignore the fact that to an extent, we don’t idolize polygamists or Right-Wing Quiverfull nuts, we consider them weird and interesting because they are way outside the mainstream. They are on TV to gawk at… because they are sideshow freaks. Only *other freaks* think they are to be emulated.

It’s just inaccurate. People chide certain people for having a litter of children that THEY CANNOT AFFORD. I can’t stand the Duggar family or anything they stand for, but the truth is, they can afford it.
Muslims ARE NOT misogynistic? Learned something new today. Might want to ask the women in some of those countries, they might have a different opinion. Can’t stand Mormons or their “sister wives” either.
People who voluntarily submit to an “arranged” marriage for a reality show is way different than having it forced on you.

Plenty of people call the Duggars irresponsible, especially in light of the latest scandal.
The guy in Sister Wives is a misogynist.
Married at First Sight has participants from different races.
This guy should at least watch the adds before speaking. He isn’t even going so far as to judge the book by it’s cover at this point. He is a step below that….
Advice: concentrate on things you actually know if you are trying to drive a point home.

“The rest of us”…?
Taking a lot of liberties in speaking for other people, aren’t you? Last I checked TLC puts these programs on because someone is watching them. TLC isn’t showing them on a sheet in their backyard for their closest friends.
In other words TLC isn’t the only one saying these things. Their audience is fine with this.

Except that no one who watches any of those shows actually thinks it’s acceptable behavior and the notion of those actions are the same thing. People watch because it’s considered a freak show and is in no way positive. Also, are we going to pretend that every white family who engages in these actions has a television show? Just because there’s a show about it doesn’t mean that anyone thinks it’s acceptable.
Terrible logic fail. Try again.

I consider any polygamy is wrong, regardless of who is doing it. I think it is wrong for anyone to have so many kids that they cannot give the kids the proper amount of attention that is necessary. I can see where the sentiment of the post comes from, but I disagree with it all regardless of the skin tone the person possesses.

Interesting observation. Though I’d have to say that people also call Mormon polygamy misogynistic and that people do talk in disbelief about the folks at my office with more than 5 kids. Still, you’re right: these reality freak shows in general, on TLC and elsewhere, focus on white people. Are any of the Housewives of … black or Asian? Has there been a black or Asian “Bachelor” yet? (Maybe there have been, but none of the ones I’ve seen blurbs about on the edges of the web pages I visit are anything but white.)

When people says its irresponsible to have multiple children is when you can’t AFFORD them and expect tax payers to pay for your huge family (any color!) The duggers are not living on government payouts. As for arranged marriage, that is usually done without consent of the bride and pre arranged since childhood!! They have no say so! So comparing that to two consenting adults (yet stupid) is ridiculous. Stop race baiting for your liberals. And to compare sister wife’s to a Muslim marriage!!! I watched that show, the women we not suppressed at all. They got to go where they wanted, wear what they wanted, talk to whom they wanted. Do you think Muslim marriages are like that!? A big fat no! The man who wrote this is racist against white people and his stupid hateful words should not be shared.

Nobody thinks the Duggars are responsible. Nobody thought octomom was either. Remember all the hate she got?
Polygamy is illegal in all 50 states and everyone shits on Mormons for doing it too.
The part people don’t like about arranged marriage is the part where children are forced into, not the part where their skin is brown. Nobody cares if an adult agrees to get paid to marry a stranger for a reality show, they’re not forced to do anything.

The only thing he’s missing is that white people condemn all of these things too. Tlc just made a sideshow out of them for our viewing pleasure. I don’t know one white person that thinks having all those kids, marrying a bunch of women, or arranging a marriage is ok. The public census is still the same, that it’s wrong, irresponsible and downright shameful. The difference I think is people from the Middle East would never let cameras in for the rest of us to mock their irresponsible or shameful behavior. So this guy can shout white privledge and we can give in to more separatist thinking or we can recognize white sideshow idiots for what they are.

June 11, 2015 at 4:55 pm
First, 19 kids and counting is a family who has been married for years. Is it irresponsible? I’m not judging but it’s irresponsible of any parent of any race single or married to have kid after kid that they can’t care for on their own. Second, sister wives is just as scoffed at as Muslims. A majority of people still don’t accept it. And married at first sight has had all different races. It’s a social experiment to see if people can be matched up by science. It’s hosted white, black, Hispanic, and Indian. So this post is completely ridiculous
Calvin Landry
June 11, 2015 at 4:58 pm
I’m not a fan of the Duggars but the idea of having a large family is what is preached in the Bible. It doesn’t matter about skin color in my mind, it is about the ability to care for a large family. It is about several issues no matter the color of a persons skin or their heritage. I don’t want to make these comments about any person, group, or background just simple observations. First off the idea of a family where there are multiple fathers and a single mother is problematic. If the family has a married couple with a large brood that is fine. The second issue is the families ability to care for a large family. If there is a large family and they are able to care for themselves without relying on government assistance no one has the right to comment. It becomes problematic when there is a large family that is relying on government assistance and they continue to procreate to increase the amount of assistance they are receiving. This litany could go on for a good while longer but I’m going to cutoff with this last statement as long as what you are doing is not affecting anyone else no one really has the right to comment.

I agree with this statement mostly, except for the fact that the show “Married at first sight” is not all white, as the other two shows listed are. It’s hypocritical to be sure, but I think it’s more a cultural bias than a race bias. Just that show, anyway.

I’d like to argue that “19 Kids and Counting” is a little different than “19 Kids and a Welfare Check” (NOT that I support the largely-untrue stereotype) since the Duggars are able to provide for their children and have multitudes for religious purposes and do so intentionally. But I’m white, so any point I’d like to make is discredited by privileged default.

So white people are privileged to have 19 kids (even if they can’t afford them), marry many wives (and maybe stone them if they commit adultery), and have arranged marriages without shame, and no one will call them white trash, nor will they get arrested if they marry more than one wife? The bitter post is silly.
Facts:
1. People who can afford the amount of children they have are not called irresponsible no matter how many children they have or what race they are. However, whites and others having more children than they can afford are called irresponsible because they are irresponsible. Having more kids then you can afford can lead to neglect and arrest regardless of race.
2. A white male in America who marries more then one woman will be called sexist and will be arrested. Also, there are money other things that go on in countries under Sharia law that is sexist.
3. A white person in an arranged marriage would be looked at the same as anyone in an arranged marriage. Who gets shamed for being in an arranged marriage? A forced arranged marriage can lead to arrest regardless of color.

Joe, there is no possible way that two people take adequately take proper care of 19 children. There simply is not enough time in a day. Therefore, many people consider anyone who has too many children to provide for emotionally as well as financially to be irresponsible. If you actually believe that money means children are not neglected, you have serious problems. Also, any family that covers up a boy molesting his sisters cannot be considered anything but irresponsible.

Very well said – the only part I don’t agree with is the Sister Wives (they are not of the “Warren Jeff’s” lot) – all parties have chosen that lifestyle, had a big brood of kids (which they can afford) – they inform their kids not brainwash them (they live in Vegas, of all places, & go to school there – none of which is by choice) – whatever goes on in their home is their business as long as it is consensual, just like yours, mine & everyone else’s. They have been very forthright & honest about their lives/struggles unlike the Duggars (as far as I know) The Browns are rather fascinating to me sorry LOL

White privilege does exist, but he’s using the wrong evidence to support it. All those shows are suppose to be for entertainment, so of course they’re going to air the most eye-catching life stories, that’s the whole point of TLC. And the majority of people don’t even support these kinds of lifestyles anyways. As for “19 Kids and Counting”, I only view it as irresponsible, because not every child is able to receive the proper attention, that the parents are suppose to give. It’s basically the older kids raising and teaching the younger ones, which is okay I guess, but it takes away time for them to act their age. Responsibility goes beyond just being able to afford to raise the children, it’s also taking care of them and actually giving them the needed attention, and no doubt there’s going to be favoritism, because that’s pretty much a given.

The bad news is, domestic violence, misogyny, and all other manifestations of hate are part of the human condition. It happens to Muslims and Non-Muslims, in the U.K. and the USA and everywhere else in the world.
The good news is we are responsible for our actions and make our own choices.
I, as a Muslim woman, can speak about Islam. The Qur’an speaks to uplift women and men as partners.
How people choose to use it is on them.
I follow ISLAM, not MUSLIMS. Humans are fallible, God is not.
My religion teaches equality for men and women alike.
There are many advantages to being a woman in ISLAM.
As a daughter, you open the gates of heaven to your parents. As a wife, you fulfill half of your husband’s deen (religion). As a mother, paradise lies at your feet. There are infinite blessings women may receive that men cannot. Amongst them include when a woman is pregnant and until she is through suckling her child it is as if she has completed a thousand fasts and all of her minor sins are wiped clean so she may start anew.
I, as an American, cannot speak for another culture or country. Sure, women aren’t always treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, but this is not just a “brown” or “non-Christian” problem.

It is irresponsible to have 19 kids even if you can afford them. There is no way you can give each of them the attention they need. You end up having the older children raising the younger children. Giving them way too much responsibility. Plus if everyone had that many children we would be putting a huge strain on the earth’s resources, create more pollution, carbon emissions, etc.

Therefore technically per capita, blacks use more welfare. I don’t think it matters either way, we should throw out all the race wars and just consider everyone Americans. But when you want to try and make on race look bad with stats, it’s easy to spin it any way you want.

They can afford it because someone gave them a TV show. Don’t delude yourself into thinking the Duggars are an average example of quiverfull families.

Does anybody know 100% that the family or the many children do not get or never got some form of government assitance? I see a lot of assumtions being made here.
Perhaps now nobody is due to making money off of their circus.

Actually, back in the bible days, polygamy, bigamy, arranged marriages, and marriages that involved the brother of the husband being obligated to marry his dead brother’s wife, were considered to be “proper” marriages.

Actually polygamy, bigamy, concubines, and marriages that involved brother marrying his dead brother’s wife, were legit back in the bible days.

Ok I have a question people are talking about tlc like it’s rasist but at the same time isn’t BET doing the same thing (blaCk entertainment television) you don’t see a station like that for white people or any other race that shows stuff just for that race now let’s think about this again I can name more than a hand full of shows on tlc that has every race in it.

Hi. I’m Mormon so I wanted to address your remark about them.
Polygamy is a concept that was taught in the LDS church but hasn’t been taught or sanctioned for over 100 years.
Those that identify as “Mormon” and practice polygamy *are not mainstream Mormon. If the church knows about the polygamy being practiced, they’re not even allowed on the church roster. They’re excommunicated if the polygamous marriages aren’t dissolved.
They’re “extreme fundamentalists” at best and cultists at worst.

Your comment is horrible and it says a lot about you as a person. But I would never tell any person, no matter how much I may disagree with them, that they should be aborted. Not even you, mocha1. And to tell another person that they are stupid speaks to your own life, not to theirs.

June 15, 2015 at 1:39 am
I also don’t agree with polygamy, but I am certainly not going to force that opinion upon others. As long as they’re not taking child brides and all involved are doing so of their own free will, who am I; are we to judge? I do agree also that too many children can sometimes equal less attention than our (as a humanity) kids need. But, again, that is only my opinion. As an individual I will give any child who crosses my path all of the attention I can afford. And give a smile to their parents/caregivers while I’m at it.

Some people may — we certainly do — but you can’t argue that these programs are not popular.
Where is the show with a large family that is black or Hispanic? Where is the show about the Muslim polygamist family? Where is the program about arranged marriages in other cultures?

June 15, 2015 at 3:05 am
Can they afford them? Let’s see how quickly they take that EIC and every other benefit now that TLC and its advertisers are no longer supporting them.
The point is that white polygamists are not called misogynists.
Guess what? Most people in arranged marriages are not forced — it’s the only type of marriage of which they are aware. They take it for granted that their marriage will be arranged.
So your characterization of “having it forced on you” is further evidence for his point.
And they find the idea of young people picking their own partners foolish.

June 15, 2015 at 3:09 am
So the Duggars aren’t take a tax deduction for all of those children?
I’ll bet they are. And I’ll be they’ll take that EIC and every other benefit now that TLC and its sponsors are no longer supporting them.
Your ignorance is showing. Arranged marriages in other cultures are not prearranged since childhood, and both the bride and groom consent. They find the idea of selecting your own mate rather foolish.
How many Muslim polygamists do you know? Or are you possibly judging based on nothing but stereotypes?

When blacks have BET it’s called entertainment. If there are no blacks in a movie, the producers are racist. When blacks call each other n****r, it’s a term of endearment. If whites say it, it’s racist. If whites embrace or promote their race in any way, they’re racist, for blacks, it’s advancement towards equality. Black and proud is Black and proud. White and proud is racist, etc., etc. double standard, etc. and so on.

First off the article did not just address “black people”. It addressed a nation of people who are non-white. Secondly, it wasnt written by a “black person”. So what’s your hang up? Are you racist against “n****s”? Look to yourself before you judge others perspectives!

white people embrace their cultural identities all the time without being accused of racism. there there festivals and holidays to celebrate being irish, german, polish, norwegian, etc, etc. black people tend not to know their specific backgrounds because they were brought to america on slave ships, and when slavery ended they faced they continued to face mountains of statutory and cultural racism. black pride came out as a response being told being black was inferior, but white pride was a reaction to assert white supremacy. there is no double standard.

You just missed the point and proved the point of this mans article…yea we see the double standard. No black man or woman uses the term nigger as an endearing term. Cultural ignorance and intolerance is what he is pointing out. Point being….if you can do out why cant I. Why is wrong only wrong when minorities do it. When WASP’s do it it’s considered diverseness or simply eccentric…but you wont ever get the point cause you’re too busy focusing on what you want to see. Not the facts.

@Judy. Yes I’m racist. And honest enough to admit it. My “hang up” is with people like yourself who don’t believe a double standard exists and won’t admit to being racist yourself. Merely writing an article that points out a specific race’s actions (white privilege), in a manner to belittle them and show those actions as some kind of crime (for lack of a better word) is in itself racist. Is there white privilege? Sure there is. Is there black privilege? Absolutely. Oh, sorry, non-white privilege. Again, an article on white privilege is written to point out what is perceived as a problem. And an article written on non-white privilege would be challenged as something that doesn’t exist. I’m sure you won’t agree and your previous reply shows you don’t, but denying that one race’s problems are somewhat their own but instead caused by another race’s treatment of them is a racist attitude. Whites did/do not cause non-whites problems. Each and every race, just as each and every person makes a conscious decision on how to behave and live. Certain aspects of one race may and will exasberate another’s problems, but didn’t cause them and surely don’t prevent that race from fixing those problems. Certain race’s will spend all their time blaming other race’s for causing their problems, trying to show proof of this, and demanding that they be given whatever it takes to fix their problems rather than spending their time doing something about it themselves. I’ve never demanded to be given anything in my life or said I was owed anything other than the opportunity to get off my lazy ass and take care of myself and my own problems. Have I ever asked for help? Absolutely. Demanded it and felt entitled to it. Absolutely not. Certain races should stop blaming one group for their problems and take some responsibility for their own actions. Then other race’s might stop having a negative perspective of that race and start respecting them. That might be the first step in ending racism. It’s tough to respect someone who doesn’t respect themselves. I could go on all day, but why bother with someone with a closed mind to the subject. Yes, I just labeled and judged you from your one reply. I’m either racist or perceptive. Probably both. Can you look in the mirror and see your true self? Better yet, admit it.

Umm if white people (or any other race) want their own station (which they basically have already) then create it! We had to create our own because no one else was! And what is played on that station can be watched by anyone of any race. There’s no special code that all black people have to get access to that channel lol. YOU just don’t want to watch it just like I don’t want to watch 19 kids and more (or whatever it’s called). That doesn’t mean I can’t watch it, it means I choose not to. Watch BET if you want or start your own WET/HET/AET.

I call it watching too much tv, maybe you should change the channel or do something productive with your life instead of bitching about “white privilege”. In the United States the majority of homeless people living on the streets are white males. Where’s their privilege? They don’t have any, because white privilege is bullshit.

I am white, and didn’t watch the 19 kids show. I think it was a showcase for irresponsible people who considered it a right to have more children than they could provide for.
In America, when I see ANY family with 19 kids, I think the same thing. Why should the rest of us be forced to collectively shoulder the burdens of irresponsible people?
Irresponsibility is an unfortunate human characteristic, and knows no racial/ethnic bounds.
Regarding the practices of other cultures, peoples, and places, I have no opinion. I don’t form opinions when I have no knowledge.

I don?t know if finest practices have emerged round things like that, but I am positive that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game.
