VIDEO: Watch these Italian riot police show solidarity with protesters by removing their helmets

Powerful images out of Italy today show riot police removing their helmets in a show of solidarity with protesters.

The demonstration took place in Turin, with the protesters speaking out against the single EU currency, the state of the economy and rising fuel prices.

According to various reports, the demonstrators are an interesting mix of Italians, ranging from truckers to students. The protests stem from the “Pitchfork Movement,” which began as a group of Sicilian farmers pushing for government reforms, ultimately evolving into a nationwide revolt against banks, the Italian tax collection agency Equitalia, the European Union, and moves to privatize higher education.

The movement doesn’t appear to have any partisan political identity and represents a populist uprising against policies that have devastated Italy’s economy.
