‘Your chief of staff said it’: Stephanopoulos fires back at Pompeo’s claim that quid pro quo is ‘hypothetical’

Speaking to George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week this Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to say whether or not it was appropriate pressure Ukraine’s to investigate the Democratic National Committee’s server in exchange for military aid, instead saying he would not comment on a “hypothetical” question.”

“I’m not going to get into hypotheticals and secondary things based on what someone else has said,” Pompeo told Stephanopoulos, who quickly pointed out that the assertion is not a hypothetical since White House acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said it on video. “The chief of staff said it did,” Stephanopoulos said.

Pompeo replied that he “never saw that in the decision making process that I was a part of.”

“I’ll leave it to the chief of staff to explain what it is he said and what he intended,” Pompeo said. “I can speak clearly to what America’s strategic objectives were in providing this defensive weaponry to the people of Ukraine.”
