Democrats raise over $13K to help reopen firebombed and vandalized GOP office in N.C.

This Sunday, a building housing a Republican Party office in North Carolina was vandalized with graffiti and firebombed. So far, authorities don’t know who the culprits are.

According to officials, the GOP headquarters in Orange County, N.C., suffered major damage when an explosive device was thrown through a window on Saturday night. The words “Nazi Republicans leave town or else” were also spray-painted on the building.

Soon after, a group of Democrats came together and organized a fundraiser to help reopen the offices. According to BuzzFeed, after someone tweeted an idea about Democrats helping the GOP office, David Weinberger of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Technology later launched a campaign on GoFundMe.

“As Democrats, we are starting this campaign to enable the Orange County, North Carolina Republican office to re-open as soon as possible,” Weinberger wrote on the fund’s page.

Within 40 minutes, the GoFundMe had passed its $10,000 goal, and it was later halted after reaching a total of $13,117.

“Until an investigation is undertaken, we cannot know who did this or why,” Weinberger said. “No matter the result, this is not how Americans resolve their differences. We talk, we argue, sometimes we march, and most of all we vote. We do not resort to violence by individuals or by mobs.”

“The funding campaign was a way of saying out loud that we are all in this democracy together, and that we stand together against those who would destroy it through violence and intimidation.”

People said that their donations were intended to support democracy and speak out against voter intimidation.
