89% of Republicans trust Trump more than CNN

According to a new poll by the polling firm Survey Monkey, half of Americans find CNN more trustworthy than President Trump, while 43% prefer to trust the President to tell the truth over the media giant.

As reported by Axios, the poll also found that when it comes to Republicans, a whopping 89% trust Trump over CNN while 91% of Democrats polled think just the opposite. The poll, which surveyed 4,965 adults, is a stark reminder of how divided the country is when it comes to news sources.

The poll’s results also go against the presumptive narrative that says Trump’s tweeting is alienating his base.

“Not only do most Republicans approve of his use of Twitter, but asked to describe those tweets, the No. 1 mention among the GOP is ‘truthful,’ with ‘entertaining’ in second place,” Survey Monkey’s senior vice president for research, Jon Cohen, said. “[T]he biggest danger for Republicans is that they grow content with firing up the base: Fully three-quarters of pure independents (those that don’t lean one way or the other) disapprove of Trump’s tweeting, and their top three descriptors for it are ‘undignified,’ ‘mean,’ and ‘dishonest.'”

An additional NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found similar results, showing Republican trust in the media falling to just around 9%.
