A Chicago Police officer and his sister were found guilty this Friday for partaking in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Karol Chwiesiuk was charged in 2021 with five misdemeanor counts that included entering a restricted building, disrupting government business and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds with intent to impede a congressional proceeding. His sister Agnieszka Chwiesiuk was charged with four misdemeanor counts.
Chwiesiuk was convicted on of four of the charges, but was acquitted of a charged related to him entering Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley‘s office.
When agents went to arrest Chwiesiuk, his sister asked if they were there to arrest her too. After they replied no, they found pictures in her brother’s cellphone showing her alongside him at the Capitol that day.
Karol Chwiesiuk had reportedly been a Chicago police officer since 2018.
During a news conference at the time, then-Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said “if these allegations are true, it breaks my heart.”
“Participating in the siege on the Capitol in any way was a betrayal of everything we stand for, the oath (and) the law,” he said.
