Albuquerque NM welcome sign reads: ‘We do not accept checks from Donald Trump’

After the mayor of Albuquerque, N.M., appeared on The Daily Show, a welcome sign went up in the city that included a jab at former President Donald Trump.

“Welcome to Albuquerque, NM,” the sign reads. “We do not accept checks from Donald J. Trump.”

The sign was given to Mayor Tim Keller as a joke by Daily Show host Jordan Klepper, but Keller decided to display it anyway, even though it’s temporary.

“Just to clarify, we would accept one check from him for the amount of roughly $200,000 for services rendered,”  Keller, who is a Democrats, wrote in a tweet along with a picture of the sign.

“(For those hoping to snap a pic with the sign, this was just a temporary install — foam sign courtesy of the Daily Show),” he added in a follow-up tweet.

Speaking on The Daily Show, Keller said the city was never paid the $200,000 it charged Trump’s campaign for a rally he hosted during his presidency.

“Trump came for a rally and we decided to bill him, because the cost to the city were tremendous,” Keller told Klepper on the Comedy Central show. “They made us shut down downtown. We had to close City Hall.”

“In my mind, he owes us a lot more because there were about a day and a half where we couldn’t even function as a city,” he added.
