‘Black Lives Matter’ to be painted on the street in front of Trump Tower in NY

In a move that’s already provoked a reaction from President Trump, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered the words “Black Lives Matter” to be painted this coming week in large yellow letters on the street in front of Trump Tower, the New York Times reports.

“The president is a disgrace to the values we cherish in New York City,” Julia Arredondo, a spokeswoman for Mr. de Blasio, said in a statement on Thursday. “He can’t run or deny the reality we are facing, and any time he wants to set foot in the place he claims is his hometown, he should be reminded Black Lives Matter.”

This morning, Trump took to Twitter and slammed the move, saying the New York police are “furious.”

“Told that @NYCMayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the fabled & beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign,” Trump wrote. “‘Pigs in a Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon’, referring to killing Police, is their chant. NYC Police are furious!”

As the Times points out, Trump’s reference to the “Fry ‘Em Like Bacon” chant was from a 2015 protest in Minnesota.
