Bristol Palin’s fiancée posts photo showing him playing with a baby near an unsecured handgun

Bristol Palin’s fiancée is on the defensive after he posted a photo to social media, showing him playing with a child while an unsecured handgun sits nearby.

Former Marine Dakota Meyer is holding the baby, identified as Rowan, with his gun sitting on a nearby lamp table.

“Just love the fact that there is a pistol laying on the little table behind you,” one person in the comment section of the post.
“That’s just how we roll haha,” replied Meyer.

Since the photo first gained attention, Meyer hasn’t responded to questions about the image form the media.

From The Raw Story:

Bristol’s mother frequently speaks about how gun owners are mistakenly characterized as being irresponsible. At the 2010 convention of the National Rifle Association, for example, she complained that Hollywood was to blame for depicting gun owners as irresponsible. “Hollywood should look to its own business and clean it up, and then they can tell us how to live our lives,” she said.

The pistol doesn’t have a magazine in it, is pointed in a safe direction, isn’t in reach of the child, isn’t able to be activated from a distance by looking at it, is farther away than a baby is capable of reaching especially with adult supervision.

Yeah, Mike because no one has ever been shot and killed by that one pesky round still in the chamber and that baby is permanently attached to the guy’s lap and can’t possibly wander back there at a another time not depicted here.

Brian, they never do get it. I can not begin to think (even if I owned a weapon) “Hmmm….I’ll just lay this down here till I get ready to go to my bedroom/gun closet/safe.”

It’s not a thing you leave laying around in your house. You don’t. You put the damn thing away when you get home.

If he carries it the way the military protocol dictates then 1st round is in the chamber. Removing the magazine doesn’t mean its a safe gun.

Are you willing to bet your life that the clipless gun has no round chambered ?

    Didn’t think so douchebag.

How about this one .. round in chamber .. dad reaches for gun to “secure it” while baby nearby .. dad thinks gun is empty (friggin’ dumbasses that they are) and it goes OFF .. do you want to take that chance dumbass?!! And I OWN a gun collection! #1 rule .. treat a GUN as if it is loaded regardless if you know its NOT .. shouldn’t be there period!

My comment was for mike. Nothing wrong with that picture. IF it had a bullet in it? IF it had the clip in it? IF the baby could possibly even touch it? What good does it do to have the gun in the bedroom when someone breaks into the house? Too late!

I’m pretty sure that Marine Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer knows a thing or two about securing a weapon and always treating it with the proper respect (i.e. always treating it as if it is loaded, even when he just unloaded it). There are worse things out there to be upset about. I’d be more worried about the extremely conservative ideology the child will be indoctrinated into in that family than from Dakota Meyer alleged mishandling a weapon.

Without knowing how it got there, you may be jumping to conclusions. I dislike guns immensely, but he may have come in with it in his holster and when asked to hold the baby he took it out, removed magazine and laid out of reach. Two seconds later, he may have handed the baby back, picked up his gun and magazine and secured in holster. people are assuming it was there all the time, when he went to get a beer, etc. We have to stop jumping to conclusions without all the facts. maybe he is an irresponsible gun owner, but I could not make that judgement based on just this picture. I would file this and if there were other incidents, I might be able to put together a pattern of irresponsible gun ownership, but not just one picture. Just my opinion, yours may vary.

“Pesky round still in the chamber” pretty much sums up your level of intelligence on firearms, as well as the story behind the picture.

Also, that child is far, far too young to be able to engage the grip safety.

You can tell all that from a single black and white photo? You must be Jimmy Olsen. You cannot tell if the magazine is there or not. You sure can’t tell if someone is not sitting in the line of sight. Is this guy’s dick so tiny, ego so stunted, and PTSD so rampant he needs to display his sidearm on a side table? Is he terrified of a random grizzly bear attack? Lock box. Trigger guard. Leave it in the car. A home safe. His secret dungeon. Whatever.

Would any of you care if he would have left the gun holstered under his shirt where the baby could actually reach it, no, bc you wouldn’t have even known it was there! IMO, he took the gun and put it a safe distance from the child. People are ridiculous to bash someone over one picture when it doesn’t tell you the whole story.

Look I’m all for gun safety but you can’t tell anything from one picture. First the gun is out of reach of the infant. I highly doubt she strong enough to pull the trigger when the gun isn’t cocked. She doesn’t even look like she’s old enough to be able to get to the gun on her own. He’s holding her so even if she was able to walk or crawl she wouldn’t be able to. When we jump to conclusions like this with out knowing any of the facts it make us look just as bad as the extreme tea baggers we all make fun of. Oh and the basic rule of any argument is the first person person to throw an insult is the lacking intelligence.

Ok, let say the gun still has a round in the chamber. It is possible, why because I haven’t checked to see, so I will assume it is loaded until I verify. But you still drive a car, which kills more people than guns do every year. When does that debate start?

    March 22, 2015 at 10:06 am

Doesn’t matter. At all. A firearm that is not being used must be secured. That is the only proper way a firearm owner should keep any kind of firearm. If it isn’t being used or transported, you keep it locked up. You don’t keep it on a table while you play with your baby. I don’t care what your experience with weapons is, I don’t care how much a weapon is apart of your job. And someone who has handled firearms for a living should know better than to leave it unsecure. We all know, if it was in an official, military capacity, he would never leave his firearm like that and if he did, he would get his butt handed to him by his superiors.

Gun grabbers everywhere… We’re talking about a USMC vet. The military is taught the importance about gun ownership and care, and that sticks with them for life. He’s also holding an infant, who could never get a hold of that in the position he/she is in now. The gun is also pointed away from the two as you can see in the picture. It also doesn’t have a magazine in it, and it’s on “safe”. You people need to pay attention to details here. Obviously Mr. Meyers has focused his full attention onto “Rowan”, and he’s not gonna let Rowan out of his sight, especially near his weapon. If he’s responsible enough to hold someone else’s baby, then he’s responsible enough to own a gun. This is obviously just another attack on gun owners.

    March 22, 2015 at 7:44 pm

That military protocol is for overseas combat zones only, not for garrison or use here in the States. Check your facts. Also, the military is taught to put the gun on safe (which means it cannot fire unless taken off safe), drop the magazine (which removes the gun’s supply of ammo), then pull the charging handle back or cock it back, depending on the weapon (which removes the chambered round). And that’s only IF a round has been chambered. The military is taught the importance of gun safety and care from the very beginning. He’s not gonna forget all that just because he retired from the military. For all we know he could’ve been removing the gun from his holster/pocket/belt line to keep it out of reach of “Rowan” here. And if you look closely at the picture you’ll notice that the gun has been placed on safe and no magazine has been inserted into it. This guy knows what he’s doing, which is not putting Rowan in harms way.
