Cecil the Lion’s killer disappears as Zimbabwe calls for the U.S. to extradite him

Fast becoming the America’s — if not the world’s – most hated dentist, Dr. Walter Palmer has disappeared. If trying to steer clear of an outraged public and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were not enough, Cecil the Lion’s killer now has the Zimbabwean government to deal with.

This Friday at a press conference, Zimbabwe’s environment minister Oppah Muchinguri announced that they want the U.S. to extradite Palmer.

“We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he can be held accountable for his illegal action,” Muchinguri said.

Since the killing, two Zimbabwean guides who accompanied Palmer on the hunt were arrested for illegal poaching. According to Muchinguri, the country’s Prosecutor General has started the process of bringing Palmer back to Zimbabwe to face similar charges.

…if they can find him.

You can’t really blame Palmer for skipping town. According to Gawker, “Activists have been planning his death since he admitted, essentially, that, Yes, I slaughtered, skinned and beheaded that famous lion for sport but I thought it was legal. (The preferred methodology differs depending on who you ask—internet users would like to see him hunted with his own weapons, PETA has called for him to be hanged.)”
