Christian fundraising site raises over $600K for Marine who put Jordan Neely in a chokehold

The Christian crowdfunding site GiveSendGo has launched a fundraising campaign for Daniel Penny, the 24-year-old U.S. Marine who faces a second-degree manslaughter after he put disturbed NYC subway performer Jordan Neely in a chokehold before he died.

As The Daily Beast points out, the law firm representing Penny, Raiser & Kenniff, P.C., launched the fundraiser to gather funds to support his legal defense.

“Daniel Penny is, a twenty-four-year-old college student and decorated Marine veteran, facing a criminal investigation stemming from him protecting individuals on a NYC subway train from an assailant who later died,” the description on the fundraiser’s webpage reads. “Funds are being raised to pay Mr. Penny’s legal fees incurred from any criminal charges filed and any future civil lawsuits that may arise, as well as expenses related to his defense. All contributions are greatly appreciated. Any proceeds collected which exceed those necessary to cover Mr. Penny’s legal defense will be donated to a mental health advocacy program in New York City.”

As of this writing, the campaign has raised just over $630,000.

Penny turned himself in to police a day after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed it would charge him for the incident that resulted in the death of Neely. If found guilty, Penny face up to 15 years in prison.
