Dog dumped at animal shelter because owner thought it was ‘gay’ for humping another male dog

The owners of a male dog reportedly dumped the animal at a local shelter in North Carolina after is apparently humped another male dog, causing the owners to think the dog is “gay” and therefore unworthy of their love, WCCB-TV reports.

The dog, named Fezco, is being held at a shelter in Stanly County.

The shelter posted Fezco’s story to it Facebook page, hoping someone would take him in.

As the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) points out, dogs humping other dogs of the same sex is not necessarily an indiction of gayness.

“Mounting, thrusting (humping) and masturbation are normal behaviors exhibited by most dogs … They mount and thrust against other animals, people, and objects, such as wadded-up blankets, dog beds, and toys. Sometimes, dogs just rub against people or objects (without mounting them), or they lick themselves,” their website reads.

Same-sex behavior happens in about 1,500 species. According to research, interactions among animals of the same sex can help create bonds and produce hierarchies, which could aid in hunting.
