Donald Trump calls for release of sailors from Iran hours after they had been set free

Presidential candidate Donald Trump called for the release of the 10 American sailors who were detained by Iran’s Republican guard, but only hours after they were released.

According to government officials, the sailors were allowed to leave Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf at 8.43am GMT (3.43am ET), and were returned home to the U.S. The Department of Defense issued a statement on Thursday morning saying that the sailors had been released and were not harmed.

According to the Independent, they have been held overnight for “trespassing” in Iranian territory, shaking nerves in the few days leading up to a deal on nuclear between Washington and Tehran.

Trump, however, believed the saliors were still being held by Iranian authorities, in foreign waters.

According to Business Insider, Trump said that the Iranians “like to taunt us because they don’t have respect for our leaders” and that he would be “much tougher” than President Obama has been on Iran.

The Navy said it will launch an investigation into why the sailors ended up in Iran after their boat reportedly had mechanical issues.
