Ex-sheriff who called woman a ‘n****r lover’ says he’s not racist: ‘I read my bible every day’

Arkansas County Sheriff Todd Wright resigned Friday at the request of the county Quorum Court after a recording of him using racial slurs was released to the public, various news outlets reported.

In the recording, Wright becomes irate at Desiree Middlebrooks, the mother of his child, for the simple fact that she struck up a friendly conversation with a Black man. She secretly recorded Wright’s rant, where he referred to the man she was talking to as a “dread head n****r” and calling the mother of his child a “n****r lover.”

“After viewing and hearing the video I was terribly upset to know that we have someone out here that’s supposed to be taking care of us, protecting and serving to have that kind of opinion of me– I’m using me as a race because of my color,” said Justice of the Peace Inez Mclemore.

During a courtroom hearing, members of the community expressed outrage over Wright’s words while he sat in the corner and listened.

Wright finally had his turn to address the court, and said he spoke the slurs in the privacy of his own home and blamed the Devil for his behavior.

“I’m a Christian man. I read my bible everyday,” said Wright. “I am by no means a racist. That video does not show the true picture of me.”
