Florida is a scary place.
When a business owner reaches out to people like George Zimmerman as a ploy to boost sales, that’s scary. When George Zimmerman then decides that raffling off his Confederate flag painting is the marketing strategy that should be employed, that’s scary. When said business owner is the guy who declared his gun store a “Muslim-free zone,” that’s scary.
Half of the proceeds from the contest will go to Zimmerman and the other half will go to owner store owner Andy Hallinan, who is currently facing a federal discrimination lawsuit filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
“The caption, ‘the 2nd protects the first’ [sic] is a double entendre,” Zimmerman said on Florida Gun Supply’s website.
“The first flag I painted on this canvas was an American Flag, but decided to repaint over it with the Confederate Flag when I heard Andy was getting sued by CAIR [Council on American-Islamic Relations]. The 2nd flag I painted was the Battle Flag – which we need in America in order to protect the first.”
From Gawker:
Just how, exactly, the flag of a bloody secessionist movement protects that of the country it tried to separate from isn’t completely clear, but because it was painted by a famous killer, Florida Gun Supply cheerfully notes this particular incoherent Facebook meme “could be worth up to $100,000!”
This “mini documentary” featuring Hallinan and Zimmerman appeared on the gun store’s website:
