GoFundMe for teen ordered to pay $150K for killing her rapist reaches over 3x that amount

A fundraising campaign for an Iowa teen sentenced in an Iowa court this Tuesday to pay $150,000 in restitution after killing her accused rapist, has raised over three-times that amount.

Pieper Lewis was a teenage human trafficking victim who was initially charged with first-degree murder after she stabbed her accused rapist to death. She was sentenced to five years of closely supervised probation and ordered to pay $150,000 restitution to the man’s family.

The funds from the GoFundMe, started by Lewis’ former math teacher, will go towards paying off her restitution and to remove the “financial barriers for Pieper in pursuing college/university or starting her own business,” and to “Give Pieper the financial capacity to explore ways to help other young victims of sex crimes,” the fundraiser’s description reads.

As of this writing, the GoFundMe has raised almost half a million dollars.

From CBS News:

Lewis, now 17, was sentenced by Polk County District Judge David M. Porter Tuesday in the killing of 37-year-old Zachary Brooks of Des Moines. She could have faced up to 10 years in prison for each of two charges. While Lewis managed to avoid doing time, the judge warned that any violation of her probation could result in having to serve a 20-year prison sentence.
