Lauren Boebert: Jesus wouldn’t have been crucified if he had an AR-15

Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert made an unusual argument against gun control at an event this weekend in Colorado Springs, joking that Jesus wouldn’t have been crucified if he was armed with an AR-15.

At the event, which was organized by the Charis Christian Center, Boebert said that “Twitter trolls” often ask her about the contradiction between a peace-loving, non-violent Jesus and her support for gun rights as a Christian woman.

“They like to say: ‘Oh, Jesus didn’t need an AR-15. How many AR-15s do you think Jesus would have had?’” she said.

“Well, he didn’t have enough to keep his government from killing him,” she quipped.

While Boebert was just making a joke, it kind of ignores the fact that Jesus, according to the Bible, went to his death willingly. Even when his disciple Simon Peter drew his sword to defend him from the Roman soldiers who came to arrest him, Jesus told him to put the sword away.

“Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword,” Jesus told Simon Peter, according to the Gospel of Mark.
