It’s no secret that advertisers will do anything to cram their product down our throats. But if they do it creatively and thought-provokingly, it’s not such an assault on our senses, but rather more of an exercise in art-appreciation.
“Ambient ads” are an example of such creativity, since they utilize the surrounding environment they appear in to draw your attention.
The advertising strategy began when the effectiveness of traditional media started declining, giving way to innovative off-the-shelf marketing ideas. Ambient ads started appearing in British media campaigns around 1999 and have been actively evolving ever since. (h/t: Bored Panda)
