Marjorie Taylor Greene racks up almost $50K in fees for violating House mask mandate

Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been cited for ignoring the House mask mandate at least 20 times this year and has been fined at least seven times, which has resulted in $48,000 in fees, The Washington Post reports.

Other reports say a letter from House Sergeant-at-Arms William Walker late last month says Greene has been seen not wearing a mask in the House chamber at least 20 times since May. She was fined $500 in May for her first offense, with $2,500 penalties imposed for subsequent offenses, according to The Washington Post.

“You have been observed not wearing a mask on July 29, August 2, September 20, 21, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, and October 1, 12, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, and 27, and have been asked by a member of my staff to wear a mask while in the Hall of the House of Representatives on each occasion unless recognized to speak by the chair,” Walker wrote in the letter.

But in a statement this Monday, Greene said she will “continue my stand on the House floor against authoritarian Democrat mandates, because I don’t want the American people to stand alone.”

From The Washington Post:

Nick Dyer, a spokesman for Greene, said the congresswoman has been fined almost two dozen times for not wearing a mask, resulting in $48,000 in fines. An Oct. 28 letter from Sergeant-at-Arms William Walker to Greene reviewed by The Washington Post shows that Greene has been observed not wearing a mask in the House that many times since May 18.

House members are fined $500 for the first mask offense and $2,500 for any subsequent offenses.

Update: According to The Post, the subsequent 2,500 fines are taken from House members’ 174,000 annual pay. This article has been updated to include that fact, and the headline has been updated as well. We’ve also updated the source for this article.
